At the end of last year, Asami lost her beloved aunt—someone who had a profound impact on her life. Her aunt had always been stylish and worked in fashion, and over time, Asami inherited some of her clothing. Through that experience, Asami’s own love for fashion blossomed. Her aunt showed her how to enjoy putting together outfits, playing with colours, and expressing joy through personal style.
She was bold, elegant, and had a refreshingly straightforward personality—someone Asami always admired deeply. After moving to Canada, however, their time together grew scarce. In her aunt’s final years, Asami was no longer able to visit, and then came the sudden farewell—without warning, without one last conversation. It was a loss that felt unreal, one that brought deep sorrow and heavy regret.
As Asami grieved, she found herself wondering why losing someone you love hurts so deeply. Then it dawned on her: it's because the connection was real, and the memories were filled with joy and love. The pain of loss mirrors the beauty of what once was. When we lose someone dear—be it a loved one, a pet, or a friend—it hurts because of the precious time we shared. Those memories continue to live on beautifully within us.
The colours in this series were chosen with a single wish in mind—that her aunt may rest in peace. If there is a place called heaven, Asami hopes it is filled with gentle, soothing colours just like these, overflowing with calm and comfort.
I paint abstract.
And so, this series became my way of saying goodbye to my dear aunt—
my own quiet form of mourning,
The shape of goodbye.
