"Hana no Fune," meaning "flower boat" in Japanese, takes its name from the etymology of the Cymbidium orchid — the guiding theme of this series. Asami is often drawn to themes that linger in her mind, capturing the feeling of a particular moment; this time, she found herself enchanted by the orchid's delicate patterns and mesmerizing fragrance.
While painting, she kept fresh Cymbidium orchids close by, immersing herself in their scent and studying their intricate detail. At times, she felt almost like an insect — drawn irresistibly to their sweetness, lured by colour and form — and found herself wondering how the world might appear from their perspective.
Through these paintings, Asami sought to translate that impression into visual form, so that the viewer might sense not only the orchid's beauty, but its imagined fragrance. Unlike much of her work, which often grows from memory or personal experience, this series was created more intuitively — a rare moment of simply responding to beauty, without overthinking, and giving shape to the stillness that inspiration left behind.
Each painting's title is drawn from the traditional Japanese language of flowers associated with the Cymbidium orchid.
